What are varicose veins?
A large portion of the population suffers from varicose veins (usually on the legs); enlarged, ropy, twisted and bulging veins. Varicose veins often are accompanied by swelling, pain and inflammation, and can be a symptom of a progressive, chronic disease called chronic venous insufficiency. In the absence of medical care, varicose veins commonly get worse and can develop into blood clots or skin ulcers. Although varicose veins affect women and men, women have a higher risk for developing this type of vein disease. Other risk factors include pregnancy, heredity, and prolonged periods of sitting or standing.
What causes varicose veins?
When veins are healthy, blood flows through them from your legs up to your heart. Varicose veins develop when valves inside your leg veins start to fail, causing backward flow of blood and putting pressure on the vein walls. This condition is termed venous reflux. This pooled blood can cause a purplish or dark-blue color as well as the bulging and knottiness commonly associated with varicose veins.
Not only are they unsightly and uncomfortable; they can also be indicate a more serious, underlying vascular condition. For this reason, patients should strongly consider seeing a comprehensive vascular specialist (such as our Bakersfield vein clinic) when seeking to get rid of veins.
Symptoms of varicose veins include the following:
- Dark blue / purple "bunched-up" veins close to the surface of the skin
- Ropy, bulging or knotted appearance of veins in the legs
- Tired or heavy limbs
- Swelling in the legs and ankles
- Burning, itching or throbbing in the legs
- "Restless leg" syndrome during sleep hours
Whereas varicose veins occur primarily in the legs, spider veins can appear almost anywhere, most often near the surface of the skin in a patient’s face, head, neck, chest or legs. Unlike varicose veins, spider veins have few physical symptoms but are easy to spot because of their cobwebby or "road map-like" appearance. Our board-certified vein specialist at The Vein Center in Bakersfield, Dr. Mandava works with patients from Delano, Arvin, Ridgecrest, Valencia, Wasco, Taft, Tehachapi and Lancaster to determine whether they are suffering from varicose veins, spider veins or other vein irregularities.
If you are suffering from any of these symptoms, please contact us today at The Vein Center of Bakersfield to schedule a consultation, diagnose your condition, and to see what vein treatment options are available.
